Option 1. Buy packaged royal icing mix, add water to get desired consistency. To be honest this stuff works great! And why change something that ain't broken.......amiright??
Royal icing is normally used for decorating cookies or putting together gingerbread houses. It can act as a decoration OR an edible glue. You can also thin it out a bit and use it for dipping donuts or drizzling over a cake. The kind i have used below is by Virgin ice.

Okay on to an actual recipe that is very simple!
You will need:
~A stand mixer with a whisk attachment or hand mixer with whisk attachments.
~Meringue powder. See link for photo http://www.wilton.com/4-oz-meringue-powder/702-6007.html

-Icing or confectioners sugar (same thing)
-Water
-I have used Americolor food gels which can be purchased at www.flourconfections.com
Instructions for approximately 3 cups
In a stand mixer or bowl add:
-3 heaping tablespoons of meringue powder
-4 cups confectioners sugar
-1 tsp clear vanilla extract
-Slowly add 1/4 cup warm water at a time, mix on medium speed until you get the right thickness. Whip on medium speed until smooth and creamy.
Depending on what you are using it for, you might need 1/2, 3/4 or 1 cup of water to get to desired consistancy.

Hand piped design with royal icing.
